The lifespan of prostheses can be very long, but it is likely that throughout a woman's life, her breast will go through different stages that necessitate considering prosthesis replacement.
Causes of substitution
The main causes for prosthesis replacement are:
- Substitution for safety: if they are very old, even if they are intact.
- Rupture: this is an uncommon complication. Modern implants are filled with a highly cohesive gel, preventing the gel from impregnating surrounding tissues. This diagnosis is identified with mammography or MRI. Our surgeon will assess the tests to decide on a possible replacement, as sometimes the rupture is silent and we find it during a routine check-up.
- Encapsulation: if it persists 12 months post-operation, it is advisable to remove the old capsule and replace it with new ones. We will notice capsular contracture through increased firmness of the breast; in more severe cases, the breast may become deformed, and even cause pain.
- Aesthetic improvement: Following pregnancies, weight loss, or changes in shape or volume, it may be necessary to decide on a change in shape (round or anatomical) or size (larger or smaller).
- Rippling: we call rippling the folds that form on the implant, but in this case a replacement is not always necessary; a lipotransfer is proving to be a very good solution for resolving this complication. .
- Asymmetries: not all mothers are the same, apoorly planned first intervention can be a reason for having to do it again.

How can I tell if I need a replacement part?

The important thing to know is that this check needs to be carried out. Any problem will be detected early through imaging techniques. This is fundamental because, contrary to popular belief, the breakage of a prosthesis does not usually show any symptoms.
How is it done?
The revision is an operation that is usually performed under general anaesthetic through the scar from the previous breast augmentation and involves the removal of the ruptured implant and its replacement with a new one.
In general, it's a simple and short process.
What is the recovery like?
In a simple revision, the postoperative period is milder than in initial breast augmentation surgery, and it is not painful. This is because a pocket does not need to be created to house the prosthesis; it simply involves changing one implant for another.
After the surgery, you will wear a special bra for about 2 weeks, which is much more comfortable than a bandage.
