A facial lifting, also known as a rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure to improve visible signs of ageing in the face and neck, such as sagging facial skin that creates jowls, loose skin on the neck, deep creases, and folds.
It is the premier facial rejuvenation procedure that acts on the face and neck, correcting deep wrinkles around the nose and mouth, as well as fat deposits on the neck and chin, and sagging that blurs the jawline.
Applications
The purpose of a facelift is to provide a more youthful appearance and eliminate a tired look, with the primary objective being to maintain a natural result, always respecting the patient's features. This is achieved not by “pulling,” but by repositioning the facial structures that sag over time.
FAQS about Facelifts
Directions
A facelift needs to have a clear indication, which is why we cannot define a specific age from which a patient is a candidate for this procedure, although we can say that the norm is between fifty and seventy years old.
Differentiate three lifting zones
- Frontal or superior (upper zone)
- Mid-face
- Cervical/collar (lower zone)
Intervention
A facelift can last several hours, or longer when associated with other procedures. The exact placement of the incisions and the steps of the surgery vary greatly depending on the structures of the face and the technique preferred by the plastic surgeon.
The incisions generally begin at the temples, concealed by the hair, extending along a natural line just in front of the ears and continuing behind the earlobes towards the back of the scalp. If treatment of the neck is necessary, a small incision can be made behind the chin. The skin is generally separated from the underlying fat and muscles. Fat may be removed or liposuctioned around the neck and chin to improve the facial contour. The underlying muscles are then tightened, and finally, the skin, with any excess being removed.
In a facial lift, the incision is placed on the forehead, hidden behind the hair, or in certain cases, along the hairline. The skin in this area is separated from the underlying structures, tightening the muscles responsible for wrinkles and excess skin.
Anaesthetic
A facelift is usually performed under general anaesthetic with an overnight hospital stay. It is an operation that can last several hours, with the plastic surgeon’s aim being to hide scars within the scalp around the ears, following the natural hairline.
Postoperative
Generally, this is not a cosmetic surgery procedure that causes significant discomfort, which can be relieved with pain medication. Bruising might occur and will take seven to ten days to disappear. To keep the inflammatory process in check, we recommend keeping your head elevated for a few days after the procedure. The patient's appearance in the first few days bears no relation to the final result of the procedure; some pallor, bruising and swelling are to be expected, and their appearance will return to normal within a few days. Some stitches are removed after a week, while others, on the scalp, are removed later.
Patients who have undergone a facelift feel happy with their new appearance. As with any surgical procedure, you must be patient during the post-operative process, rest as much as you can, and take your time recovering.
A facelift doesn't stop your biological clock; you continue to age, but you will always look younger than if you hadn't had one, which is why we say that the effects of a facelift last for years.
