La ginecomàstia és el creixement del teixit mamari masculí. És una afecció comuna, sovint temporal, que pot afectar nois durant la pubertat o homes grans. En la majoria dels casos, no és un signe de càncer de mama ni cap altre problema de salut greu.

Gynecomastia is the medical term used to describe the abnormal growth of the mammary gland in men, resulting in breasts that resemble those of a woman. It affects a high percentage of men, around 50%, and can affect one breast or both. The excess volume is caused by an excess of breast tissue or excess fat in the breast; to a lesser extent, there may also be excess skin.

FAQs about gynaecomastia

Directions

We recommend it for healthy patients with adequate preoperative assessment, not for patients with significant overweight, nor for those consuming anabolic steroids. In this case, intake should be suspended and appropriate oral treatment should be administered. If the patient has recent gynecomastia, they may see results of volume disappearance in a short time. If the problem persists, surgery would be the best option.

Intervention

We must consider gynaecomastia in different degrees.

Grade I: Mild increase in breast volume without excess skin
Grade II: Moderate increase in breast volume with or without excess skin.
Grade III: Exceptional breast volume increase with excess skin

Depending on the stage, we apply different surgical techniques:

  • Liposuction: removal of adipose tissue.
  • Surgical excision: removal of glandular tissue.
  • Exeresis and liposuction: a combined technique for the removal of glandular and adipose tissue.
  • Excision of gland and skin: these are usually larger lumps or those with a significant flaccid component.

Anaesthetic

Each surgical technique requires a type of anaesthesia: general, local with sedation, or local only. If the anaesthesia is local, the patient will be able to go home after a period following the procedure.

Postoperative

Whether the operation has been performed by liposuction or excision, you will feel some discomfort in the following days and will have swelling that will gradually subside from the first week. You must use a pressotherapy system, usually a specially designed garment for this procedure.
