What is breast augmentation surgery?
Breast augmentation, or augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at enhancing the size and shape of the breasts. This can be achieved by introducing an implant, which can allow for an increase of one or more cup sizes. During the initial consultation, it is very important to assess the patient's prior condition, including breast size, shape, skin firmness, and overall health. The selection of the surgical technique is fundamental to achieving good results.
The patient must honestly explain their expectations so that the surgeon can explain valid alternatives and also the risks and complications of each.

Intervention
It is necessary to carry out a pre-operative assessment to consider the patient fit for this procedure. The surgery will be performed under general anaesthesia, and one night’s hospital admission will be required for post-operative observation.
It is extremely important to carefully select how we place the prostheses, there are 3 possibilities, each of which is determined by the plastic surgeon based on the patient's physical characteristics.

What indications should I consider?
In any plastic surgery intervention, it is very important to consider its indications:
- When the breasts have not developed (aplasia).
- Underdeveloped breasts with little development in puberty (hypoplasia).
- Loss of volume after weight loss, pregnancy and breastfeeding. In these cases, there may be a degree of ptosis (sagging) which can be corrected with breast augmentation.
- Breast asymmetry, breasts with different volumes that need to be corrected with the placement of prostheses of different sizes.
- There is also an indication for intervention in patients who, despite having volume, wish to increase it further.
In some cases, like with ptosis surgery (drooping breasts), not only is an augmentation performed, but it is also complemented by a mastopexy (breast lift) to help maintain the areolas in their exact position.
Whatever the reasons, this procedure must be carried out by plastic surgeons with knowledge of the process and after careful consideration of all aspects of the procedure.
What is the technique for inserting the prosthesis?
The surgeon has three possible access routes to introduce the prostheses:
- Via periareolar Peripheral incision at the level of the areola.
- Via inframammary or submammary: inframammary incision.
- Axillary route armpit incision, utilising a natural fold.
What is the recovery like?
Once the intervention is completed, the surgeon will apply an elastic bandage, which will be removed the following day before you go home. We will then replace it with a sports bra, which you must wear day and night for the first month. For the first 24 to 48 hours, your breasts may feel tight and be tender to the touch. In a normal recovery period, you will be able to return to your normal daily activities after one week, and resume sports activities after one month.
Augmentation mammoplasty has an immediate result, but we recommend that you do not be impatient; in the first few weeks, the breast needs to adapt well to its new shape and size, and it is not until the third to sixth month that total breast flexibility and prosthesis stabilisation are achieved.
