FAQs about otoplasty

Intervention

It should be noted that ears are not fully symmetrical and minor asymmetries may persist after the procedure.

The incisions made to the auricle are located behind the ear and are usually imperceptible.

The duration of the intervention is usually one to two hours depending on the complexity of the procedure used. Once the intervention has been performed, the patient goes to the recovery room until the medical team discharges them and provides the post-operative medication.

This intervention can be performed on children from the age of 7, by which time the development of the ear is complete. In the case of children, we must wait for them to show discomfort with their ears; we should not point out the defect, as this could create a complex where none exists.

Correction of prominent ears

The defect of the prominent ear is caused by one or two problems:

  • A very large shell, it's the angle from the ear to the skull.
  • Lack of a fold (antihelix), found at the top of the ear.

Anaesthetic

We perform otoplasty under local anaesthesia, but especially with children, we administer light sedation, which allows the surgeon to work more comfortably and keeps the child calm and relaxed during the procedure.

Postoperative

You will need to wear a bandage around your head for a few days to keep your ears in the correct position and help with the swelling process.

Otoplasty is not a particularly troublesome procedure, although it is normal for the earlobe to undergo a more or less evident inflammatory process in the first few days, which will disappear over time.

It is important to keep the dressing on for the first few days, day and night, then only at night for a few more days.

You can return to your normal activities after a week. It is not recommended to undertake strenuous activities or heavy physical work.

It will be necessary to wait about four weeks to evaluate the final results.
