What is buccal fat removal?

Buccal fat removal is a minimal cosmetic surgery that aims to improve facial features by reducing the size of the cheeks. An incision is made inside the mouth to remove the fat pads (buccal fat pads) located on each side, thereby reducing the thickness of the face, with immediate effects.

The goal is a rejuvenating effect, resulting in a slimmer and more harmonious face.

The intervention is performed through an internal approach:

  1. Local anaesthesia is applied.
  2. Two incisions are made in each cheek from the inside of the mouth.
  3. The fat structures are removed. The amount removed will depend on the results the patient wants and the specialist's assessment.
  4. The specialist places stitches, whose scar is not noticeable because it is inside the mouth.

The postoperative period after a buccal fat removal is usually not very painful, and recovery tends to be quick if you follow the surgeon's recommendations on hygiene, medication and diet. After surgery, the patient will need to keep the compression bandage placed by the surgeon on for a couple of hours. The main purpose of this bandage is to reduce the appearance of bruising as well as swelling.

After the operation the patient may take liquids only. When the doctor so decides, soft foods can be introduced to complete the diet.

Buccal fat removal can be combined with any aesthetic medicine and surgery treatment that helps you slim and improve the shape and achieve a more defined face.
