There is no universally "best" breast implant. Implants can be round, anatomical (teardrop) or ergonomic, with different profiles, cohesive silicone gels and placement approaches. The best one for you is the one that fits your anatomy, your breast tissue and your aesthetic goal. Choosing the implant is a medical act: the plastic surgeon decides it with you in an individual consultation.
Breast implants have improved a great deal over the years: silicone gels have an increasingly natural movement and high cohesiveness, surgical techniques are more precise, incisions smaller and recoveries faster. That is why the question “which is the best implant?” does not have a single answer: there are many combinations because every patient is unique. What matters is choosing the shape, size, profile (projection) and type of gel well. If you are considering a Breast augmentation in Girona, the plastic surgeon specialised in breast surgery will advise you after listening to you and studying your case.
Types of breast implants: round, anatomical and ergonomic
Implants differ above all in their shape, but also in their profile (projection), their Contents (type of gel) and the placement route. This table summarizes the usual options:
| Tipo de prótesis | Forma | Profile / projection | Contenido | Usual route |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Redonda | Symmetrical: same volume top and bottom | Low, moderate, high or very high, depending on the desired neckline | Cohesive silicone gel | Submamaria, periareolar o axilar |
| Anatómica (en gota) | Teardrop: more volume in the lower part | Profile defined by height and projection | Firmer gel; cover usually textured | Submamaria o periareolar |
| Ergonómica | Round at rest and anatomical when upright (adaptive) | Projection that follows the body's movement | Cohesive gel that adapts to your posture | Submamaria o periareolar |
Shape is only one of the variables. The placement plane (in front of or behind the pectoral muscle), the size and the incision route also influence the result and are decided at the consultation.
Shape, profile, gel and route: the four key decisions
1. La forma
Round implants provide more filling and projection in the upper pole, with more pronounced cleavage. Anatomical ones imitate the natural slope of the breast. Ergonomic ones combine both behaviours: a rounded shape when you are lying down and a teardrop shape when you stand up.
2. The profile or projection
For the same volume, the profile determines how much the implant “projects”. A high profile gives more projection with the same base; a low profile, a more discreet result. The choice depends on the width of your chest and the look you want.
3. The filling (silicone gel)
Today's gels are cohesive: they hold their shape and reduce the risk of leakage. The more cohesive the gel, the firmer the feel and the better it holds its shape; a slightly softer gel offers a softer feel. The balance is adjusted to your breast tissue.
4. The placement route and plane
The incision can be inframammary (under the fold), periareolar (edge of the areola) or axillary. The prosthesis can be placed in front of or behind the pectoral muscle. Each combination has advantages depending on your anatomy and the amount of your own tissue.
Why do feel and the risk of rotation matter?
The feel depends mainly on the cohesiveness of the gel and on the amount of tissue covering the implant: in very slim patients the difference between a firm and a soft gel is more noticeable. Rotation matters with anatomical implants: if a teardrop implant rotates, it can distort the shape of the breast; round implants, being symmetrical, do not cause this problem even if they move. That is why lifestyle (sport, activity) also weighs in the decision.
How is the right implant for you decided?
No implant is absolutely better than another. The choice is based on a consultation that takes into account:
- Your anatomy: chest width, amount of breast tissue and position of the breast.
- Your aesthetic goal: a more natural or more projected result, desired size.
- Your lifestyle and your preference regarding feel.
- The condition of the skin and whether or not it needs to be combined with a lift (pexy).
The final indication is always established by the plastic surgeon. Round vs. ergonomic: detailed comparison →
