What is blepharoplasty?

This is the name given to a surgical technique for rejuvenating the eyes. Excess skin and bags can occur on both the upper and lower eyelids.

Blepharoplasty repositions tissues, bringing freshness and opening up the eyes, eliminating signs of tiredness and aging and achieving a result that will last for years.

Skin laxity occurs due to the relaxation of muscle and skin which, over the years, loses its smoothness and elasticity.

Instructions

The priority objective of this procedure is to maintain the naturalness of the result, which is why the technique does not aim to perform a stretch, but rather a readjustment of the tissues so that the natural structure of the face and natural expression are not altered. Once the procedure is completed and after a prudent recovery period, the patient can return home.

The procedure lasts between 40 and 120 minutes depending on whether it is 2 or 4 eyelids.

FAQs about blepharoplasty

What techniques do we use?

The procedure can be performed on the upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both. On the upper eyelid, the surgeon makes incisions using the natural creases.

On the lower eyelid, there are two techniques:

The traditional, making an incision just below the lashes. This technique is suitable for patients with eyelid laxity, for whom skin excision is necessary to achieve the proper tension.

2. The transconjunctival, the cut is made on the inside of the lower eyelid. This technique is suitable for patients who have bags under the lower eyelid but no excess skin; the advantage is that there is no external scar. The fat, located in small pockets, is removed through the incisions. Extremely fine sutures are used for closure.

What type of anaesthesia is the procedure performed under?

Blepharoplasty can be performed under local anaesthesia or local anaesthesia with sedation. This type of anaesthesia allows the patient to be awake and completely at ease, without experiencing any pain.

The upper eyelid can be done under local anaesthetic, although it is always the surgeon who decides the type of anaesthetic that will be used after the assessment.

Who is the intervention intended for?

This intervention is indicated for those who wish to improve the appearance of their eyes, for reasons including:

  • Drooping of the upper eyelids.
  • Fat bags on the inner corner of the upper eyelid.
  • Bags under the eyes on lower eyelids.
  • Excess skin.

Bags under the eyes typically start to appear from the age of 35, with three commonly forming on the lower eyelid and two on the upper. This can occur in younger patients if there's a genetic predisposition. These bags give a tired appearance, even after ample rest, and are impossible to conceal, even with effective corrective make-up.
