Before having surgery it is worth understanding each step well: choosing an experienced plastic surgeon, assessing the technique and the type of implant (anatomical, round, ergonomic…), doing a volume test in front of the mirror and knowing key aspects such as the incision, capsular contracture or the non-surgical option with your own fat. It is a decision made with complete information and an individual medical assessment.
Before undergoing a breast augmentation procedure there are several important things you should know. Breast augmentation in Girona must be performed by an expert plastic surgeon, because there are different surgical techniques for breast augmentation and not all patients are the same: the starting shape and size of the breast must be carefully assessed in order to choose the right technique. Below we gather, step by step, the most important points to be clear about before deciding.
Choosing the implant and its size
It is essential to listen to the patient and how she wants the result: whether she is looking for a natural breast augmentation or a rounder breast appearance. This is where the choice of breast implants and implant type comes into play. The implants can be:
- Anatomical, for a more natural-looking result.
- Round, when more projection and cleavage are wanted.
- Teardrop-shaped, with volume concentrated in the lower part.
- Ergonomic, designed to adapt to the movement of the breast.
In breast augmentation the size must also be decided. Carrying out volume tests with the patient is very important: in front of the mirror it becomes clear which breast size she feels most comfortable with, so as to select the breast implant that suits her taste while also taking her breast tissue into account.
The surgical technique
A small incision is made to insert the implant. The location of the incision depends on the anatomical plane in which it is placed:
Placement plane
The implant can be placed behind the pectoral muscle, in front of it, or in an intermediate area that we call dual plane. The choice depends on each patient's tissue and the result sought.
Scar location
The breast augmentation scar can be placed in the areola, the armpit or the breast fold. Whenever possible, this decision is made jointly with the patient, taking her preferences into account.
La contractura capsular
It is a complication the patient should know about. With the introduction of silicone implants, the body generates a capsule (scar tissue) that, in a low percentage of cases, can contract (tighten) and give the breast a hardened appearance. This complication must be detected in time to apply the appropriate treatment and resolve it.
Another frequent question is whether silicone implants can cause breast cancer. To date, it has not been shown that this is a possibility. It is important to keep up gynaecological check-ups, always accompanied by diagnostic imaging tests, to make sure everything is perfectly fine.
Breast augmentation without surgery
It is possible to give the breasts more volume without surgery through fat transfer (breast augmentation with your own fat): fat is extracted from one part of the body and injected into the breasts. Bear in mind that the size achieved cannot match that provided by a silicone implant. We use this technique successfully as a complement to mastopexies or in patients who do not want breast implants but wish to round out their neckline.
Types of implants depending on what you are looking for
Each type of implant responds to a different aesthetic goal. This table summarises the most common options:
| Tipo de prótesis | Indicative result |
|---|---|
| Anatómica / lágrima | A more natural shape, with the volume concentrated in the lower part of the breast. |
| Redonda | Greater projection and cleavage, a fuller look in the upper pole. |
| Ergonómica | It adapts to the body's movement, aiming for a more natural feel and behaviour. |
| Own fat (lipotransfer) | Moderate augmentation without an implant; ideal as a complement or to round out the cleavage. |
