Breast lift (mastopexy): everything you need to know

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgery that lifts and firms sagging or loose breasts, corrects asymmetries and repositions the areola. It is indicated after pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight changes or natural ageing. It does not always add volume; when more size is also desired, it can be combined with implants. Candidacy and technique are determined in a consultation with the surgeon.

Breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a surgical procedure designed to lift and firm sagging or drooping breasts. It is an option intended for women who want to restore the firmness of the bust after pregnancy, breastfeeding, significant weight changes or simply the natural ageing process. If you are considering a breast lift in Girona, here you will find what it involves, its benefits, the techniques and scars depending on the degree of sagging, recovery and how to know whether you are a candidate.

Benefits of a breast lift

  • Restoration of shape and position: it corrects sagging and lifts the breasts for a more youthful and aesthetic appearance when gravity, breastfeeding or ageing have altered their shape.
  • Improved self-esteem: dissatisfaction with the bust can affect confidence; satisfactory results can improve body image perception.
  • Correction of asymmetries: many women have differences in size or shape between their breasts, which mastopexy can balance out.
  • Personalised procedure: every woman is unique and the technique is adapted to her anatomy and aesthetic preferences.

Mastopexy techniques and their scars

The technique is chosen according to the degree of sagging (ptosis) of the breast. The greater the sagging, the larger the scar usually needed to reposition the tissue:

TechnicalWhen it arisesCicatriz orientativa
Periareolar (around the areola)Caída leveGoes around the edge of the areola; tends to be concealed
VerticalCaída moderadaAround the areola and a vertical line down to the crease
En T invertida / anclaSignificant sagging or a lot of excess skinPeriareolar + vertical + horizontal in the fold
Mastopexia + prótesisSagging with loss of volumeThat of the chosen pexy; it adds an implant to provide volume

The specific technique and scar pattern are defined by the surgeon during your consultation. If you are also looking for volume, take a look at Breast augmentation.

What recovery and scars are like

Mastopexy leaves permanent scars which, with proper care, tend to soften over time. To help them heal, it is usually recommended to follow the surgeon’s instructions precisely, which may include scar creams or silicone patches, and to avoid direct sun exposure on the area during the following months, since the sun can darken them. During recovery it is common to wear a special support bra and to avoid exertion for the first few days. The exact timelines for returning to your activity are set by the medical team according to the technique performed.

Lift with or without implants

Mastopexy on its own repositions the breast but does not enlarge it. If, in addition to sagging, there is a loss of volume (common after breastfeeding), it can be combined with an implant to restore size and projection in a single procedure. If the breasts are large and heavy, on the other hand, the indicated surgery may be a breast reduction. Which one is right depends on your starting point and your goals.

Are you a candidate for a breast lift?

If you are considering a mastopexy, it is important to consult a certified plastic surgeon to determine whether it is suitable in your case. In general, ideal candidates are women who:

  • They are in good general health.
  • They do not plan to breastfeed in the future.
  • Have sagging, lax or asymmetrical breasts.
  • Have realistic expectations about the result.

Dr Mike Dewever, the clinic's specialist surgeon in breast surgery, will see you and explain the whole procedure. Request your free consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Does a breast lift increase size?
Not on its own: a mastopexy repositions and firms, but it does not add volume. If you also want a larger size, it can be combined with an implant in the same surgery. The surgeon assesses which option suits your anatomy.
What scars does a mastopexy leave?
It depends on the degree of sagging: periareolar in mild cases, vertical in moderate ones and inverted-T (anchor) when there is a lot of excess skin. The scars are permanent but tend to fade with proper care.
How much does a breast lift cost?
There is no single price: it varies depending on the technique, whether or not it is combined with implants, the complexity and the postoperative care. The exact quote is confirmed at the consultation. The clinic offers funding options.
Can I breastfeed after a mastopexy?
Ideal candidates are usually women who do not plan to breastfeed in the future. If you plan to have more children and breastfeed, it is advisable to mention it during the consultation, as it may influence both the timing of the surgery and the result.
When is the final result visible?
The shape gradually settles over the following weeks and months, as the swelling goes down and the scars mature. The medical team will tell you the follow-up visits and timelines for your case.
Is a breast lift or a breast reduction better?
It depends on the starting point: mastopexy treats sagging and laxity, whereas reduction is indicated when the breast is large and heavy. The consultation determines which one fits your goals.
