Lipofilling: permanent results using only your own fat

Lipofilling consists of removing fat from where there is too much (lipo) to place it where it is lacking (filling). Because your own tissue is used, there is no rejection or foreign bodies. Part of the grafted fat is reabsorbed during the first months; the fat that remains after that time tends to be permanent if your weight stays stable. It is a safe and effective technique for adding volume and harmony to the breasts, buttocks or face, but always with realistic expectations: it is not a method for losing weight, nor a substitute for implants in every case.

If you have a hollowing of the upper chest after pregnancy, breastfeeding or very drastic weight loss, in cases of asymmetry, or if you want to go up a bra size, Body lipofilling in Girona is a safe and effective method to achieve it with your own fat. At Medics Integral Salut we have one of the most renowned plastic surgery specialists in this technique, who will assess whether lipofilling is the best option in your case.

Below we explain what it involves, why fat purification is the key to the result, which areas are treated, how long the results last, what recovery is like and what the price depends on.

Lipofilling with fat only: what it involves

It is about removing fat where we have too much (lipo) to put it where it is lacking (filling). The fat is obtained by gentle liposuction of a donor area (abdomen, flanks, thighs…), processed and re-injected into the area to be enlarged or harmonized.

An important detail: the fat we obtain must be approximately double what we want to implant, because a considerable percentage is lost during purification. This purification is the most important part of the procedure: the purer the fat, the greater the chances that the graft will survive and the result will last.

Why your own fat has advantages

  • It is autologous tissue (your own): the body recognises it as its own, so it does not cause rejection reactions or allergy.
  • It does not introduce external substances or materials.
  • In passing, it improves the contour of the donor area by removing localized fat.
  • Delivers a natural-looking and natural-feeling result.

Areas where lipofilling is applied

At the clinic, both the body and the face are treated with good results:

AreaWhat it is used for
PechoCorrect hollowing of the upper pole, asymmetries or gain some volume naturally
GlutesImprove shape, projection and harmony with your own fat
Face — rejuvenationLower eyelid, cheekbones, chin, nasolabial fold, lips and jawline

How long do the results last?

After grafting, the body reabsorbs part of the fat during the first few weeks; that is why it is sometimes slightly overcorrected or a second session may be considered. The fat that remains after the first few months tends to stay stable in the long term. In other words: the result can last for years, provided your weight remains stable, since large weight fluctuations can change the grafted volume. Exact percentages cannot be guaranteed: graft survival depends on the technique, the quality of the fat and each patient.

What recovery is like

Lipofilling combines a donor area (where liposuction is performed) and a recipient area (where the fat is grafted). In the postoperative period it is usual to notice swelling and bruising in both areas, which subside over the following weeks. Depending on the extent, a compression garment may be recommended on the donor area, along with avoiding pressure on the grafted area (especially relevant in the buttocks). The surgeon will give you the specific guidelines and the time to return to your activities.

Am I a good candidate for lipofilling?

As a general guideline, lipofilling usually suits people who:

  • Wants to enlarge or harmonise an area (breast, buttocks, face) with a natural result.
  • Has enough fat in a donor area to obtain the graft.
  • Maintains a stable weight and has realistic expectations about the achievable volume.
  • Aims to correct hollowing, an asymmetry or small contour defects.

If what you are looking for is a large-volume augmentation, the surgeon will assess whether lipofilling is enough or whether another technique is more suitable. The indication is always individual. Discover buttock augmentation →

Frequently asked questions

Is lipofilling permanent?
Some of the fat is reabsorbed in the first few months, but what remains after that period tends to stay stable in the long term. The result can last for years as long as a stable weight is maintained, since large weight fluctuations can change the volume.
Why is it necessary to extract more fat than is implanted?
Because a significant percentage is lost during purification. Around double the amount that will be grafted is usually obtained. Purification is the key step: the purer the fat, the greater the chances that the graft will survive.
Can there be rejection or allergy?
Since it is your own fat (autologous tissue), the body recognises it as its own, so there are no rejection or allergic reactions associated with external materials. Like any surgery, it does have general risks that the surgeon will explain to you.
In which areas can it be done?
It is performed with good results on the breasts and buttocks, and also on the face for rejuvenation of the lower eyelid, cheekbones, chin, nasolabial fold, lips and jaw.
Is more than one session sometimes needed?
It can happen. As part of the fat is reabsorbed, in some cases a second session is scheduled to refine the volume and consolidate the result. This is assessed individually.
How much does lipofilling cost?
There is no single price: it depends on the donor area, the area to be treated, the volume of fat, the complexity and whether more than one session is planned. The reliable way is a personalised consultation. See also the funding options.
